Bajaj Electricals Project SMILE implementation success Story :

Bajaj Electricals Ltd (BEL) is six business unit organization, manufacturing and marketing Lighting, Luminaries, Appliances, Fans product lines. BEL has a infrastructure related business unit called Engineering & Projects BU and it takes turnkey projects in Lighting, Transmission Line Towers, Telecom Towers and Rural Electrification areas. BEL also has common shared services for Sales Support, IT, Finance, HR, Legal, Audit etc and hence our IT infrastructure is also being shared across these diverse business units. Till Mar'2009 BEL was using legacy ERP system, which was developed almost decade ago.

Looking at the business requirements BEL undertook a business transformation project titled "Business Process Improvement through effective use of IT" and this project was targeted towards both Business process improvement opportunities and also to change our legacy systems to the state of the art, latest technology and best of the breed application solutions available in the market. This project was started in the month of Apr'2008 and one of the leading consultants were engaged to do this study and recommend us the process improvements and IT blue print for our business. BPI exercise was completed in four months time frame and IT blueprint was arrived at, by the external consultant and was presented in Aug'2008. But internally it was felt that recommended IT solution footprint should be further evaluated. And hence cross functional team was formed internally to evaluate all the recommendations. Process of evaluation took almost Six months time frame and evaluation committee also recommended following set of best of the breed application and then we started our journey of Applications implementation under the project name PROJECT SMILE.

  1. Oracle EBS ERP (Modules : Purchasing, Inventory, Order Management, AR, AP, GL, Fixed Asset, Cash Management, DBI for Procurement & Financials)
  2. Oracle Demantra (Demand Management Solution)
  3. Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning Solution
  4. Oracle i-Supplier Portal for connecting all Suppliers
  5. Oracle Siebel CRM software (Modules : Sales Order Management, Accounts, Pricing, Trade promotion, Territory management, Quotations, Opportunities)
  6. Oracle Business Intelligence – Sales Analytics
  7. Oracle Fusion Middleware – SOA
  8. Integration of all of the above and also integration with existing legacy Intranet application and Extranet for dealers application.

The Project name SMILE itself was acronym arrived from the project objectives and describes as :

S – Simplification of Processes
M – Migration to the new technology
I  - Innovation & Integration
L  - Learning Orientation
E – Efficient and Effective organization

This implementation was successfully completed within 11 months time frame and was done with the help of Oracle Consulting and Deloitte consulting services. During the project implementation, there were several newsletters, shirts with logos, training programs and continuous steering committee reviews were conducted to make sure that 65 year old legacy organization accepts changes in almost all the functional areas and that too simultaneously to make these new set of application as way of life. We had gone live with big bang approach at all our branches and for all marketing BU's w.e.f.01st Apr 2010 and are stabilized during last 11 months. We definitely feel that we have immensely benefited due to this big organization transformation project and the results are getting reflected in our financials. We have also received four awards so far for this project from various institutions.
