CIO Of the Fortnight

Hello friends, my name is Ravi Sharma working as Head- IT at Watson Pharma Pvt. Ltd. Born on September 2, 1959 at Himachal Pradesh, I stay with my wife and son at Mumbai. Although my parents do reside at Himachal Pradesh post retirement.

I still remember school days when I used to travel about eight kilometers up and down the mountain to reach school. Post 7th class moved to Mumbai and continued further studies in Mumbai. Have Studied in B.L. Ruia high school and then Mithibai college for graduation in 1986. NMIMS for post-graduation in Computer Management 1987. Welingkar college for MBA.

I like all sports and watch regularly on TV but favorite one is Badminton. Have won couple of tournaments in badminton. I like Bjorn Borg as a cool guy. Never react and give advantage to your competitor. By the way Mumbai Indian is my favorite IPL team.

My first job was with Hindustan Lever Ltd as trainee. It was fun to not to look at father for pocket money after that. As the Head- IT at Watson Pharma Pvt. Ltd., pharmaceutical company in to generic drugs. It is a US based MNC with Head quarter at California, I take care of all IT/Business initiatives. Here I have implemented SAP R/3. All companies I have worked with have different culture and hence it is very important to align to current companies culture and get jelled with business users.

IT is an business enabler and helps them to have ease of operation, be competitive and increase the velocity of decision making. As IT is no more a support function now, it should get proper recognition in the management circle. No IT solution is complex to handle. What is required is to have proper mapping with the business processes. Cost is something which is relative. I feel in coming future industry will adopt the applications based on cloud technology, cost being the major factor.

Since IT projects are with time constraints they are always remarkable. But implementing SAP for Sterlite group was remarkable as this was multi product multi location implementation in big bang approach.

I am a self-made man. Never thought of impossible. Once decide it will be achieved. My role model is my father who taught me to do hard work.

My wife is housewife and cooks delicious food among other tasks. I like all vegetarian food with specialty of Chhole. Goal was the book which I liked most. Our son has just finished college. I use social networking sites LinkedIn and Facebook some times to connect with fellow CIOs and industry peers.
